This online learning course was created to replace instuctor-led training during New Employee Orientation. The switch to elearning reduced the weekly commitment for the subject matter experts and also reduce the time that new employees spent in orientation. This course introduces staff to a range of topics that relate to hazardous materials and is a a precursor to on-the-job training.

This learning solution needed to reduce training time for staff and reduce the workload for subject matter experts.
Course content was dictated by compliance standards. This course weaves a story through the various topics to introduce the learner to the topics. Because Hazard and Safety training is mandatory (and often rather boring for the learners), this course focuses on implementing opportunities for interactivity through knowledge checks and a short software simulation. These elements are both engaging and provide an opportunity for learners to practice tasks which will become a part of their job.
Initially, the subject matter experts desired to convert their Orientation PowerPoint to a click-through eLearning course. As I am a strong believer in providing an engaging learning experience, my first task was to convince subject matter experts that this content could be presented differently. I drafted a detailed course outline and pitched a general story line for the course. After initial buy-in, I drafted a rough version of the course with text content, sample images, a rough prototype of the simulation experience, and example activity questions. This draft course was poured over during a series of meetings where every element was reviewed and approved by the entire team. From here, I completed edits, finalized the content, and developed the final visuals.
