When transitioning from file management on a typical shared network drive to a SharePoint platform, some employees need much more assistance than others. This is true of many software trainings but especially true when transitioning to a popular platform that many employees have used at previous jobs. Instead of training the entire company on all the details of the new system, employees are being encouraged to access self-help lessons as needed. These short and interactive modules are designed to meet employees where they are at and provide assistance on a topic of choice.
Camtasia for screen recording, Articulate Storyline for interactive elements, Adobe Premiere for videos, Field Recorder, Adobe Audition
Lessons were designed to be short, memorable, and interactive to engage learners in a topic that is typically rather boring. This engagement is necessary to ensure that the learner is actually learning what they need to know once the lesson is completed.
Nine lessons were designed to cover SharePoint content and be approachable to learners at all levels. While all of the content could have been covered with the typical software screen casts, these lessons highlight important take-away points by giving the learner the opportunity to think through and engage with what they were learning. By combining screen casts with interactive elements and interesting visuals, learners can take each lesson in a digestible and memorable chunk.
The starting point for this project was to review an instructor-led training. I organized the content into an outline and script for the narration with a basic description of visuals and interactive elements. Scripts were reviewed by IT and the Legal department before production began on modules.
For each module, visuals were drafted, audio was recorded, and interactions were built. Once a draft was completed, the review process was repeated. Any required edits were made. Work then began on the next lesson.
These lessons were posted on the company intranet for staff to use as needed. Additionally, if an employee is struggling with the use of SharePoint, all modules can be assigned through the company LMS to ensure completed training. This flexibility will allow individual departments and teams to adjust their approach as their employees need.
